What is Permanent makeup?

What is Micropigmentation or Permanent Makeup (PMU)?

Micropigmentation or Permanent Make-Up is a term used to describe facial cosmetic tattooing. This service is custom designed for each individual client according to their face shape, skin-tone, eye color, hair color and most importantly, skin type. Color pigments are deposited just below the epidermis of the skin for the purpose of creating definition to enhance the individuals natural beauty. Semi-permanent make up as the name implies requires periodical maintenance to ensure the freshness of the look. Ombre Powder Brows does not inhibit hair growth.

What is Ombre Powder Brows?

Ombre Powder Brows is a form of tattooing, unlike the older traditional method, it is a more modern method because it is all surface work meaning it is on the epidermis layer of the skin.  The technique result in a natural, soft and more powdery and fluffy with a faded front and a crisp tail. Because it does not penetrate deep into the dermis layer of the skin, the results will last up to 1-3 years depending on skin type and lifestyle.  All results vary.

Do you offer Microblading?

No. All my work is currently machine work, using a handheld cosmetic tattoo machine and disposable single needle cartridges. I recommend my friend and  coworker, Leslie Leon, if you are interested in microblading work. She can be reached at 828-767-1318 and you can check out her work via IG @SpartanburgMicroblading.

What is Combination Powder Brows?

*COMBINED SERVICE ALERT*  Recommended for normal/dry skin with small pores. Combo brows consist of two different cosmetic technique, resulting in a customized powder brow tattoo. The result is a natural, soft/fluffy hair strokes at the bulb of the brows and more saturated/ powdery tail. The strokes may be performed by a microblading tool and/or cosmetic machine, last up to 1-3 years depending on skin type and lifestyle.

All results vary, ask Tyra if you are a candidate for this procedure.

How is Ombre Powder Brows different from Microblading?

Both Powder Brows & Microblading are a form of eyebrow micropigmentation or cosmetic tattooing. Microblading uses a pen-like device with a disposable microblade attached to stroke very thin lines of pigment. Ombre powder brows is performed using a cosmetic handheld machine. The major difference between the two is that ombre powder brows offers a soft solid fill, where microblading mimics your natural brow hair strokes.

What pigments do you use?

We use iron oxide pigments. These pigments fade over time as your body will naturally absorb it. They’re are considered the safest semi permanent pigments on the market.

How long do I have to wait to get Botox?

It is recommended to wait at least 3 weeks before or after the powder brows procedure prior to getting Botox procedure. Botox may affect the healing process and possibly change the symmetry of your new brows.

If I am pregnant and/or breastfeeding, may I be able to receive this service?

NO. This is considered an elective procedure and you will not be an eligible candidate for this procedure until you have deliver your baby and/or finish breastfeeding. Permanent Cosmetics are not safe for women who are pregnant or nursing.  Pregnancy can cause undesirable results due to hormonal changes in the body.

Does it Hurt?

Pain level is subjective to each individual. Everybody has a different level of pain tolerance but most clients are completely comfortable and relaxed during the appointment. You may feel slight discomfort but the results will far outweigh this.  You may take TYLENOL prior to the appointment but NOT ASPRIN.  A highly effective numbing solution is applied before and during the treatment to keep you feeling as comfortable as possible.  Clients have compared the sensation to tweezing or threading your eyebrows.  (I have even had a few clients fall asleep during the procedure).

Can I wash my face and wear makeup after?

No on the brows for at least 48 hours, but everywhere else is fine. Please only follow instructions in the aftercare kit given to you.

What is the appointment process like?

The 3 hour appointment is extremely interactive to help keep clients nerves at rest. We begin by mapping out your new brow/ lip design with makeup and use various measuring devices to create ideal symmetry.  We can also test color choice against your skin so you can see it prior to the Micropigmentation.  A numbing solution is used during the procedure to ensure the appointment is as comfortable as possible for the client.   My clients have access to a mirror throughout the entire appointment to check in and watch the process whenever they would like to. I send clients home with a moisturizing ointment to apply throughout the following 10 days.

What can I expect immediately after the procedure?

•  Most clients leave the appointment with no redness.  The numbing solution used during the appointment helps to control any swelling or redness which means you can continue your day with no funny looks or questions.

Immediately following your procedure, the tattooed area will appear to be darker and bolder in color and more sharply defined. Over the next 2 days it will appear even darker and thicker as scabs begin to form. It should take up to 10 days for scabbing to be over.

•   Swelling and redness is minimal with most clients, and will disappear within 24-36 hours.  In some cases, it may last around the eye area for up to 3 days, but will not prevent you from working or socializing. The treated area may feel a bit like sunburn afterwards, but there should be minimal discomfort.

Can I work out after the procedure?

It is highly recommended not to work out for at least 10 days.  Getting them wet may cause premature lifting of your scabs and increase the chance of infections and loss of pigment.

How do I maintain my powder brows once they are fully healed?

The powder brows procedure do not prohibit hair growth patterns, therefore your brow hair will grow back  normal. You will continue to groom (wax, tweeze, or thread)  your brows as usual with your brow artist. If you do not have a brow artist, feel free to schedule an appointment with me for a monthly brow maintenance to keep your powder brows looking good!

Will I need a touch up after my initial appointment? How long will my new brows last?

It usually takes at least 2 sessions for desired results. The first appointment is about structure and design. The touchup is about seeing how the skin heals and retains pigment, as well as making any necessary adjustments to achieve better symmetry and volume.  If you don’t feel the need for it, then it is not necessary.

Touch up appointments can be made 6-8 weeks after your initial appointment. Annual touchups are highly recommended to maintain fresh looking results. Additional touchups (at minimum charge) may be necessary to achieve desired results as each person heals differently and may factors can lead to varied results.

Your brow tattoo can last 1-3 years depending on sun exposure, lifestyle and skin type. Oily skin types tend to fade faster than dry skin types.

What can I expect once healed?

•   Exposure to the sun over time can cause fading and discoloration of the pigment. Once completely healed, you may apply sunscreen on the treated area. Wear large sunglasses and a hat for further protection. Rinse and dry the area thoroughly when in contact with chlorine.

•   Glycolic acid and face peel products must be kept away from the tattooed area as continued use could lighten the pigment.

•   If you are having laser resurfacing or laser hair removal after your tattoo has healed, please inform the laser technician. Continue at your own discretion. Laser procedures may darken, lighten, or discolor the tattooed area.

•   If having an MRI in the future, you must let the technician know that you have been tattooed with iron oxide pigments.

-->You may continue to wax, tweeze, or thread and continue your brow maintenance routine as usual for optimal appearance.

How long will my permanent makeup last?

It should last up to 3 years depending on skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare. An annual touch up is recommended to refresh the brow tattoo. If the following applies to you, you tattoo will fade faster and touch up may be needed sooner than expected:

- Oily Skin

-Work out 5-7days/week conisitently (sweat, salt, oil production

-Out in the sun( have an outdoorsy lifestyle/tanning booth)

-Swim (exposure salt and chlorine)

-Iron deficiency

-Frequent smoker

-Certain medications will also increase fading

I have a previous tattoo/microblading can you tattoo over or fix them? Will it be at the touchup?

The tattoo must be VERY faded in order to work over or corrected. It is advised to email or text Tyra pictures for approval first, before booking your appointment online.

Working over other artists work is often times more work, challenging and time consuming then working on a blank canvas, therefore, all new clients are consider a new service. For that reason we DO NOT touchup other artist’s work for touchup pricing. **Extra fees will apply if color correction is needed. Once you become a client of Tyra Lay Beauty, LLC you will be granted the touch up rates.

What is your sterilization/sanitization process?

Cosmetic tattoo/ PMU services are performed in a treatment area permitted and approved by North Carolina Health Dept Board. Our studio follows the Board of Cosmetology/ NC Board of Cosmetic Arts required sanitation regulations. All treatment areas are inspected and approved yearly. We use only disposable products that can be disposed after each client.  All machine parts and surfaces that may come in contact with fluids are all wrapped with protective barrier film.

On completion of the treatment, the needles are placed into a sharps container and then disposed of correctly. All needles are single-use, come in a sterilized package and are disposed of after each client. Gloves and mask are worn at all times during the procedure and disposed after each client. Hospital grade disinfects or Cavicide disinfectant are used in between every client.

May I bring someone to my appointment?

Absolutely no one is allowed in the treatment room during the procedure. However, they may provide input during the consultation portion of the appointment.

Is it customary to tip for permanent makeup and/or any of your services?

As in any service-based industry, tips and gratuities are very much appreciated. Cash or Venmo is preferred, @tyralaybeauty. What would also mean very much to me is a personal referral to a friend and a feedback/review of your experience via google or facebook.
